data.gov.uk BETA website

Background

The Government is releasing public data to help people understand how government works and how policies are made. Some of this data is already available, but data.gov.uk brings it together in one searchable website.

When the project was officially launched in January 2010 it contained 2,500 data sets.

Brief

Develop a new look and feel* for the homepage and section landing pages incorporating secondary navigation. Visualise the new data unlocking service and data landing page incorporating new search tools.

Design a site styleguide to include visual, behavioural and technical standards.

*The data.gov.uk interface has now been reskinned to bring it into line with the current Government Digital Service style.

Solution

We reviewed the existing site and audited the site content, mapping the site information architecture (IA) to a range of potential user journeys associated with the main activities. We identified social objects associated with each activity and chose core features and tools, widgets and views that supported these user activity.

The site colour palette was also refreshed and graphics simplified to make site navigation easier.
